Real-time systems able to process enormous amounts of data, to structure and combine them, to generate information and make it accessible in a pleasant graphical form to selected groups of users are called smart manufacturing solutions. Their essence covers the field of traditional Manufacturing Execution Systems (according to MESA International) solutions (level 3 according to ANSI/ISA-95), expanding them by new approaches in areas covered traditionally by ERP systems. The manufacturing information systems (MES, Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions) in this broader sense cover real-time collection and archival of production data, their mathematical and statistical processing, comprehensive visualisations, production monitoring and control, support for controlling energy and material consumption, operative maintenance support, etc. The solution than makes it possible to measure efficiency of manufacturing processes and provides important information for managers to aid their decision-making. Key performance indicators (KPI) are available for a prompt and clear overview of the manufacturing process.
MES can integrate data from geographically distant sites into a comprehensive database and this makes it possible to calculate and display overall efficiency, as well as to compare specific sites with each other. The system communicates with other systems in the enterprise (ERP, SCM…), therefore this system integration is both horizontal (various plants) and vertical (management systems, SCADA, ERP…). MES traditionally covers the space between management systems at technological level and enterprise systems. This space is now exceeded and MES functions can complement or even substitute some functions of ERP systems. A reasonably designed manufacturing information system is open in terms of information, flexible, able to adapt to changing demands of users and to grow according to users’ needs. The key words in this regards are cooperating production, knowledge-controlled solutions exceeding customer’s expectations.
All the data the system works with are validated. Stored data have VTO (Value, Time, Quality) attributes and the system is optimised for work with enormous time sequences. Manual inputs and interventions are reduced to the minimum level. A comprehensive archive of historical data allows you to reconstruct production conditions anytime in the past, if necessary.
The principal feature of MES is its ability to collect various types of data from different sources, to process them and to give the user a clear, accurate and credible view of the current state of the production process in real time. An inherent feature of MES is aggregated data (complexities) and their generation and processing. This is the fundamental characteristics that distinguish MES from isolated single-purpose systems and solutions. MES allows a hierarchic, strictly individualistic and safe approach to data, controlled by a system of access rights. It guarantees that every user receives the information they need, just when they need it, and in the form most suitable for the user.
Usage of an appropriate software technology is an inevitable prerequisite for a successful MES implementation, application and utilisation. Our proprietary D2000® technology is used in our solutions, as this technology is able to stand up to the strictest demands as regards efficiency and reliability and it is practically verified in a number of very demanding applications. Detailed knowledge of this technology, resulting from our own development, is yet another added value for the client, since it enhances reliability of the solution.
